Challenges we solve

Common problems that slow down your workflow — and how Ratio Ready handles each one.

KDP rejects coloring book interiors for the wrong reasons

KDP wants 8.5x11 inches at 300 DPI with 0.125-inch bleed (so trim = 8.75x11.25). Most beginners submit at the trim size, no bleed, and get rejected. Or they submit at 72 DPI and lines come out fuzzy.

50+ pages = 50+ manual exports without batch tooling

A typical coloring book has 50-100 line-art pages. Hand-exporting each at the right DPI, trim, and bleed eats an entire weekend. By page 30 something gets misnamed and the upload fails midway.

Cover wrap math is unforgiving

KDP coloring book covers are a single image — front cover + spine + back cover. Spine width depends on page count (60 pages = ~0.13 inches, 100 pages = ~0.22 inches). Get the math wrong and the cover gets rejected or, worse, prints with the title on the spine.

Etsy buyers want the same book as a printable PDF

Many designers sell the same coloring book on KDP (physical) and Etsy (digital download as a PDF). Two output paths from one source: KDP needs interior PDF + cover wrap; Etsy wants letter-size and A4 PDFs of the line art.

Your workflow with Ratio Ready

1

Upload your line-art set

Drop all 50+ pages of line art. Procreate exports, scanned hand drawings, AI-generated line art, or vector exports — all work. Validated for resolution and ink-density before processing.

2

Pick output target (KDP, Etsy, both)

Target KDP and we output 8.75x11.25 with bleed. Target Etsy and we output letter + A4 PDFs. Pick both and we run twice in one job.

3

Process all pages in batch

Each page gets resized, DPI-stamped, bleed-padded, and named in book order (page-001, page-002, ...). AI upscaling kicks in if any page is below 300 DPI at trim size.

4

Download structured ZIP

Get a ZIP with interior/ folder (KDP-ready pages in book order), etsy/ folder (letter + A4 PDFs), and previews/ folder (watermarked listing images). Upload directly to KDP or Etsy.

When you’d use this

Four common scenarios where Ratio Ready saves the most time:

  1. Launching a 60-page mandala coloring book on KDP and Etsy. 60 mandala line drawings done in Procreate at 4096x4096. Drop all 60 in, target KDP + Etsy, get back interior PDFs + cover wrap + Etsy listing PDFs in one ZIP. Replaces ~6 hours of manual export.
  2. Re-issuing a bestseller with new bonus pages. Your bestselling 50-page Christmas coloring book sells well; you want to add 10 bonus pages for the next holiday season. Run all 60 through Ratio Ready, replace the KDP interior file, refresh the Etsy listing — same workflow, no spec relearning.
  3. Selling a kids coloring book pack as digital downloads on Etsy. Designed a 30-page kids' coloring pack. Run through Ratio Ready in Etsy mode, get back letter + A4 PDFs at 300 DPI. Bundle into one Etsy listing with the auto-generated listing PDF describing what's inside.
  4. Upscaling AI-generated line art to KDP-ready resolution. AI line-art tools often output at 1024-2048px. KDP at 8.75x11.25 needs ~2625x3375. Drop your AI line art into Ratio Ready with KDP target — alpha-aware ESRGAN upscales and outputs to exact spec.

Common mistakes

Mistakes I’ve seen (and made) that cost real time and refunds:

1. Submitting interior pages without bleed

KDP wants the artwork to extend 0.125 inches beyond the trim line on all 4 sides — so an 8.5x11 page is actually 8.75x11.25 at the file level. Submitting at exactly 8.5x11 gets rejected. Always include bleed.

2. Saving line art as JPG (compression artifacts on edges)

JPG compression creates grey halos around black lines — the dreaded 'fuzzy line' problem. Always save line art as PNG or 300 DPI PDF (lossless). Reserve JPG for full-color cover art only.

3. Calculating spine width with the wrong page-count formula

KDP spine width = (page count) x 0.0025 inches for white paper, x 0.0024 for cream. A 60-page white-paper book has a 0.15-inch spine. Many designers use 0.002 or 0.003 (wrong) and the cover misaligns. Use KDP's official calculator.

4. Putting page numbers inside the bleed zone

Bleed = the 0.125 inches that gets trimmed off. Anything inside the bleed zone disappears. Page numbers placed too close to the edge get cut off in print. Keep all critical content (page numbers, signatures) at least 0.25 inches from the trim line.

5. Forgetting to lock the line-art layer to pure black

Line art should be 100% black (#000000), not dark grey. Anti-aliased grey edges convert to muddy lines on print. Use threshold or 'pure black' export options to lock lines to true black before processing.
