How to Create Printable Posters for Etsy and Amazon

Printable posters (also called digital download posters) are digital files that customers purchase, download, and print themselves or through a local print service. Unlike print-on-demand, printable posters have zero cost of goods, no shipping, no inventory, and no fulfillment logistics. Your entire cost is the time spent creating the design and preparing the file.

On Etsy, the "printable wall art" and "digital download poster" categories are among the most profitable in the digital goods space. Top sellers report profit margins above 90% because the only recurring costs are Etsy listing fees and transaction fees. There is no per-unit production cost.

On Amazon, printable posters exist in the KDP and Merch by Amazon ecosystems. The buyer demographics skew slightly different: Amazon buyers tend to be less design-savvy and more price-sensitive, but the volume is significantly higher. Many successful sellers list on both platforms.

The 2:3 aspect ratio is the dominant standard for posters worldwide. It matches the most commonly available poster frames: 12 x 18 inches, 18 x 24 inches, 24 x 36 inches, and 20 x 30 inches. If you can only offer one ratio, make it 2:3.

Most poster frames are sold in portrait orientation because that is how the majority of wall art is displayed. On Etsy, approximately 65-70% of bestselling printable posters use portrait orientation.

However, landscape orientation works well for panoramic photographs, horizontal cityscapes, seascapes, and wide-format abstract art. Landscape posters are less common, which means less competition.

Some sellers offer the same design in both orientations when the composition supports it. When creating poster sets, maintaining consistent orientation across the set is important for buyers who plan to display them together.

DPI determines how densely pixels are packed when printed. The standard for high-quality printing is 300 DPI. For posters, the minimum acceptable DPI depends on size and viewing distance.

Always prepare files at 300 DPI. Even though a large poster viewed from 3 feet away would look fine at 150 DPI, many buyers print at smaller sizes where 300 DPI makes a visible difference.

Printable posters delivered as digital downloads should be in sRGB color space. This is the default color space for web displays, consumer printers, and most print-on-demand services.

CMYK is the color model used by professional offset printers. The CMYK gamut is smaller than RGB, meaning some bright, saturated colors that look vivid on screen cannot be reproduced in CMYK ink. Neon greens, electric blues, and vivid purples are the most affected.

For Etsy and Amazon, delivering files in sRGB is correct because most consumer print services accept sRGB and handle conversion internally. Delivering CMYK can actually cause worse results due to double conversion.

The manual process involves three core steps: cropping to the target aspect ratio, resizing to the target pixel dimensions, and setting the DPI metadata.

Step 1: Crop to 2:3 — Position the crop frame to include the most important visual elements while maintaining balanced composition.

Step 2: Resize — For 24x36" at 300 DPI, target 7200 x 10800 pixels. If your image is smaller, upscale it first.

Step 3: Set DPI to 300 — Confirm Resolution field reads 300, convert to sRGB, flatten layers, and export.

Mockup images are the single most important factor in poster listing conversion rates. Buyers cannot see or touch a digital file, so mockups serve as visual proof that your design will look good when printed and framed.

Each mockup takes 5 to 15 minutes manually in Photoshop. For a listing with 5 mockup images (the recommended minimum for Etsy), that is 25 to 75 minutes per design.

Etsy's search algorithm also weighs the number of listing images. Listings with 8-10 images rank higher than listings with 2-3 images. More mockups mean more images, which means higher search ranking.

The types of mockups that perform best: a close-up detail shot, a room scene showing the poster at scale, a styled flat lay, a framing detail shot, and a lifestyle shot in context.
