Etsy Mockup Size Requirements

Mockups follow Etsy's listing photo specs: 2,000+ px on the longest side. Plus the ideal mockup count per listing, scene types that actually convert, and how to size for the auto-cropped thumbnail.

Etsy mockups use the same specs as listing photos: 2,000+ pixels on the longest side, JPG or PNG, max 10 MB per file. Etsy allows up to 10 listing photos per listing (mockups occupy slots 1-10), and the first photo is auto-cropped to a 570x570 thumbnail. The ideal mockup count is 5-7 photos covering different scenes — clean product shot, lifestyle scene, frame variant, size comparison, what-you-get layout.

Successful Etsy wall art and clipart listings consistently include 5+ mockups. Listings with only 1-2 mockups convert significantly worse because buyers want to see the product in context (a frame, a wall, a styled scene) before purchasing.

Mockups can be 2,000 x 2,000 (square) or larger like 3,000 x 2,250 (4:3). Square is universally safe; rectangular sources get cropped to square for mobile thumbnails on the first photo position.

The ideal 5-7 mockup mix for wall art listings

Successful wall art listings consistently use this mockup structure:

  1. Photo 1: Clean product shot (becomes the thumbnail). The print framed simply on a clean background, centered. This becomes the 570x570 thumbnail in search results — the most-viewed image you publish.
  2. Photo 2: Lifestyle scene. The print on a wall in a styled room (living room, bedroom, hallway). Shows scale, context, and how the print "lives" in a real space. Buyers visualize the print in their own room.
  3. Photo 3: Frame variant. The same print in a different frame finish (matte black vs natural wood vs white). Helps buyers see how flexible the design is.
  4. Photo 4: Size comparison. The print shown at multiple sizes side by side (8x10, 16x20, 24x36) so buyers understand the size range you offer.
  5. Photo 5: What you get / file map. Visual showing the digital files included in the purchase — a layout image with each ratio variant labeled, demonstrating the deliverable contents.
  6. Photo 6 (optional): Close-up detail. A zoomed-in crop showing texture, color, or fine detail of the print. Reassures buyers about print quality.
  7. Photo 7 (optional): Alternative scene or seasonal context. A second lifestyle scene showing the print in a different room or styling context (especially useful for versatile designs).

Listings with all 5 core mockups consistently outperform listings with 1-2 photos. The investment in mockups pays back in conversion rate.

Sizing the first photo for the auto-cropped thumbnail

Etsy auto-crops the first listing photo into a 570x570 square thumbnail used in search results, category pages, and shop displays. This is the single most-viewed image you publish — optimize for thumbnail clarity above all else.

Center your subject in the middle 60% of the photo. Etsy crops from the center, so subjects near the top, bottom, left, or right edges get cropped out of the thumbnail. If the photo is square (2,000 x 2,000), the entire photo becomes the thumbnail. If the photo is rectangular (e.g., 2,400 x 2,000), the top and bottom 200 pixels each get cropped off.

High contrast helps thumbnails read at small sizes. Subtle, low-contrast designs that look great at full size become muddy at thumbnail size. Use clear color separation between the subject and background, especially for the first photo.

Test the thumbnail before publishing. Most design tools show a 570x570 preview; if not, manually crop the photo to a center square at 570x570 to see what shoppers will actually see in search results.

When to use each mockup type

  1. Clean product shots — every listing. Always include at least one. The clean shot is what becomes the thumbnail and gives buyers a clear view of the artwork itself, separate from any styled scene.
  2. Lifestyle scenes — wall art and home decor listings. Show the print in a real room (or convincingly mocked-up room). Particularly important for wall art where the buyer needs to imagine the print in their space. Less critical for clipart and digital ephemera.
  3. Frame variants — wall art listings with multiple frame options. If you list the print as "fits black, white, or natural wood frames", show all three frame variants. Reduces buyer hesitation about whether the design works with their existing frames.
  4. Size comparison — listings with multiple size variants. A side-by-side layout showing the same design at 8x10, 16x20, and 24x36 (with rough scale reference like a hand or sofa) helps buyers pick the right size for their space.
  5. What-you-get / file map — digital download listings always. Crucial. Buyers of digital downloads can't physically inspect the product, so showing them visually what files they'll receive (filename map, size list, PDF preview) reduces "what am I buying?" hesitation. Single most underused mockup type.

Common Etsy mockup mistakes

1. Only 1-2 mockups per listing

Listings with 1-2 photos convert significantly worse than listings with 5+. The investment in additional mockups pays back in conversion. Use all 5 core mockup types (clean shot, lifestyle, frame variant, size comparison, what-you-get) at minimum.

2. First photo with subject near the edges

Etsy auto-crops the first photo to a 570x570 thumbnail from the center. Subjects near the edges disappear from the thumbnail. Center your focal subject in the middle 60% of the first photo.

3. Inconsistent mockup style across photos

A clean white-background shot followed by a heavily-filtered lifestyle scene followed by a watermark-covered detail shot looks chaotic. Use consistent lighting, color grading, and visual style across all mockups in a single listing.

4. Mockups under 2,000 px on long side

Etsy upscales smaller photos for display, producing visibly soft results. Listings with sharp 2,000+ px photos out-perform listings with smaller photos. Always start at 2,000 px minimum.

5. Skipping the "what you get" mockup for digital downloads

For digital download listings, buyers can't physically inspect the product. A clear "what you get" mockup (file map, size list, layout visual) reduces purchase hesitation more than any other mockup type. The most-skipped, highest-impact mockup category.
