Print-Ready Images for Printful

Printful uses per-product print files (unlike Redbubble's single-source model). Each product type has its own pixel spec and DPI minimum. This guide covers every product class, the most common upload failures, and how to batch-prep multi-product launches.

Printful is one of the largest print-on-demand fulfilment networks. Unlike Redbubble (one-image, all-products), Printful uses per-product print files — each product type (t-shirt, hoodie, mug, poster) takes its own dedicated file at its own dimensions. This means more upload work but also more control over per-product placement and quality.

This guide covers every major Printful product class with its exact pixel spec, DPI minimum, and format. Plus the common upload failures (low resolution, wrong DPI, missing transparency) that get products rejected or printed poorly.

File requirements

Product Type Print Area (px) DPI Format Notes
T-Shirt (Front) 4,500 x 5,400 150 min, 300 ideal PNG (transparent) Standard DTG print area; transparent bg for fabric color show-through
Hoodie (Front) 4,800 x 6,000 150 min, 300 ideal PNG (transparent) Larger print area than t-shirt; same transparency rules
All-Over Print Tee 8,640 x 5,460 150 min PNG Sublimation print covers entire shirt; warp distortion at seams accounted for in template
11oz Mug Wrap 2,475 x 1,155 300 PNG Handle area = 1.25 inch print-free zone on right edge
15oz Mug Wrap 2,790 x 1,365 300 PNG Slightly taller than 11oz; same handle-zone rules
Poster 18x24 5,400 x 7,200 300 JPG or PNG Most popular Printful poster size; portrait default
Canvas 16x20 4,800 x 6,000 300 JPG or PNG Gallery-wrap edges add 0.75 inches around — extend artwork or use solid edge color
Phone Case 1,242 x 2,208 300 PNG iPhone-class spec; Galaxy spec varies slightly
Throw Pillow 18x18 5,400 x 5,400 300 JPG or PNG Square; same design front + back
Tote Bag 4,200 x 4,200 300 PNG (transparent) Transparent bg for bag fabric color show-through

Printful's required minimum is 150 DPI for apparel, 300 DPI for posters/canvas/mugs. Aim for 300 DPI on everything for best print quality.

Why Printful uses per-product files (and why that matters)

On Printful, each product variant takes its own dedicated print file. A t-shirt design needs a 4,500x5,400 PNG; the same design as a hoodie needs 4,800x6,000; as a mug it needs 2,475x1,155. The art is the same; the file dimensions are not.

This is unlike Redbubble's one-upload-everywhere model. The trade-off: Printful gives you per-product placement control (you can position the design differently on the shirt vs the hoodie), but you do more upload work upfront. For a designer launching across 10 products, that's 10 file exports.

Batch processing solves this. Drop your master design (highest resolution you have) into Ratio Ready, target multiple Printful product specs in one job, get back a folder per product type with the file at exact spec. The same master ships to t-shirt, hoodie, mug, poster, canvas — each at its required pixel dimensions and DPI.

Master file rule of thumb

Upload your master at 8,640 x 6,480 px or higher. This covers the largest Printful print area (all-over print tee at 8,640 x 5,460) with margin. Every smaller spec downsizes cleanly. Upscaling smaller masters to this size first ensures every Printful product looks crisp.

When transparency is required (and when it isn't)

Printful's apparel products (t-shirts, hoodies, tank tops, sweatshirts) need transparent PNG when the design doesn't fill the print area. If your design has white pixels and the buyer picks a black shirt, those white pixels print as white ink — making your background visible as a square of white on the dark fabric.

For posters, canvas, art prints, and mugs with full-coverage designs, JPG works fine. The print covers the entire surface; there's no fabric showing through.

Default rule: if any part of your design has empty space and the product has a colored substrate, use transparent PNG. If the design fills the print area or the substrate is always white (poster paper), JPG is fine and the file is smaller.

Common Printful upload failures

Printful's upload validator checks DPI metadata, dimensions, and format. Common failures:

  • DPI metadata not 300 (posters/canvas). Printful's validator reads DPI tags. If your file is 5,400x7,200 pixels but the metadata says 72 DPI, Printful flags it as low-quality. Use a 300 DPI metadata stamp tool (Ratio Ready stamps every output automatically).
  • Wrong dimensions for the specific product. Uploading a t-shirt-spec file (4,500x5,400) to a hoodie product (4,800x6,000) results in a smaller-than-intended print. Always match dimensions to the exact product variant.
  • Image too small (apparel). Below 150 DPI at the print area, Printful warns that print quality may be poor. Below 100 DPI, the upload is rejected. Always upscale low-resolution sources before upload.
  • JPG used for transparent apparel design. JPG cannot store transparency. If your t-shirt design has white space, use PNG. JPG fills white pixels with white background — visible as a white square on dark shirts.
  • Color profile not sRGB. Printful's print pipeline expects sRGB. CMYK files (common from print designers) get converted but may shift colors. Convert to sRGB before upload for predictable output.

Launching across 10+ Printful products from one design

A typical Printful launch covers t-shirt + hoodie + tote bag + mug + poster + canvas + phone case + sticker = 8 products. Hand-exporting that as 8 separate files is ~2 hours of repetitive work. Worse, every time you tweak the design, you re-export 8 files.

Batch tooling collapses this:

  1. Save master design once at 8,640+ pixels long edge.
  2. Drop master into Ratio Ready. Pick all Printful product targets (t-shirt, hoodie, tote, mug, poster, canvas, phone case, sticker).
  3. Process — each variant resizes to the exact Printful spec, with 300 DPI stamped, transparency preserved where needed.
  4. Download per-product ZIP — folders organised as tshirt/, hoodie/, mug/, etc.
  5. Upload each folder to its matching Printful product. ~5 minutes total upload work.

Re-launching with design tweaks

When you update the master, re-running through Ratio Ready regenerates all 8 product files in 60 seconds. Replace the Printful product files via their dashboard. No re-export tedium.
