Why Printful uses per-product files (and why that matters)

On Printful, each product variant takes its own dedicated print file. A t-shirt design needs a 4,500x5,400 PNG; the same design as a hoodie needs 4,800x6,000; as a mug it needs 2,475x1,155. The art is the same; the file dimensions are not.

This is unlike Redbubble's one-upload-everywhere model. The trade-off: Printful gives you per-product placement control (you can position the design differently on the shirt vs the hoodie), but you do more upload work upfront. For a designer launching across 10 products, that's 10 file exports.

When transparency is required (and when it isn't)

Printful's apparel products (t-shirts, hoodies, tank tops, sweatshirts) need transparent PNG when the design doesn't fill the print area. If your design has white pixels and the buyer picks a black shirt, those white pixels print as white ink — making your background visible as a square of white on the dark fabric.

For posters, canvas, art prints, and mugs with full-coverage designs, JPG works fine. The print covers the entire surface; there's no fabric showing through.

Default rule: if any part of your design has empty space and the product has a colored substrate, use transparent PNG. If the design fills the print area or the substrate is always white (poster paper), JPG is fine and the file is smaller.

Common Printful upload failures

Printful's upload validator checks DPI metadata, dimensions, and format. Common failures:
